Database fights cargo theft

Better means of sharing cargo theft information came online this week. Freight carriers, shippers, insurers and law enforcement are collaborating on maintaining a database and secure network to help law enforcement react faster when thefts occur.

The database, called CargoNet, will also aid in developing intelligence on theft locations, the type of goods stolen, and the freight modes being targeted. It's the latest of recent steps taken by shippers, transporters, insurers, drugmakers and law enforcement to halt the rise in cargo theft, as reported earlier.

To help those reluctant to report thefts--due to concerns about company reputation or an insurance-premium boost--all member companies provide information, but only law enforcement gets to see the specifics. The system masks details from insurers and other members.
