Central Nervous System: Top Counterfeit Drugs
Drugs like Zyprexa, an anti-psychotic, are counterfeit targets for their high market value. The drug is Eli Lilly's biggest seller and has provided $2.5 billion in revenue through the second quarter this year.
Zyprexa counterfeits showed up in the UK supply chain in 2007. Regulators recalled the product, but not until several batches reached patient level. Eli Lilly informed the regulators; the drug giant had been tipped off by a label printing company, which had been informed by a suspicious repackager. Like the case with the anti-clotting drug Plavix, the fake Zyprexa involved parallel distribution.
Counterfeit OTC painkillers, including aspirin and Tylenol, are big counterfeit targets in developing countries.
