Millipore expands in Massachusetts

Millipore has expanded its Massachusetts presence with a manufacturing facility in Danvers. The 30,000-square-foot facility will be used to produce Mobius single-use products for biopharmaceutical manufacturing, including the company's FlexReady products.

"We made a decision to move manufacturing of this product line from California and bring it to Massachusetts," says Millipore chairman, president and CEO Martin Madaus, in an announcement. Millipore expects the facility to employ 120 before the end of 2009. The company, headquartered in Billerica, employs more than 1,000 in Massachusetts and almost 6,000 around the world.

Mobius FlexReady products are made of single-use assemblies, separation devices, and process-ready hardware optimized for clarification, media and buffer preparation, tangential flow filtration (TFF) and virus filtration unit operations.

The new facility follows by just two months the opening of the Millipore Process Development Lab at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell. The company donated $225,000 in equipment and services to the lab, which will be used for downstream purification research as well as training for students and industry professionals. Lab equipment includes clarification, chromatography, ultrafiltration/diafiltration (UF/DF) systems, and disposable mixing systems.
