EpiPen update boasts user protection

Needlestick prevention has also become an objective for the venerable EpiPen: An update of the auto-injector includes needle protection before and after use.

The EpiPen is often the first line of defense against anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction triggered by insect stings, latex and other allergens, which can be tamed by the drug epinephrine. The reaction can be fatal within minutes, so speed is essential in its administration.

The auto-injector comes in a one-step flip-top case that allows for single-handed removal. Orange colors and arrows help users identify the needle end of the device, reducing the risk of accidental thumb puncture. And the unit's oval shape prevents it from rolling out of reach, says maker Dey Pharma, a Mylan subsidiary.
