Bribery allegations torment China's drug regulator
China's State Food and Drug Administration continues to be plagued by scandal. Deputy chief Zhang Jingli is now under investigation for corruption.
Five of Zhang's former colleagues also were arrested recently on suspicion of taking bribes. One of them, Wei Liang, is accused of taking $145,000 in bribes in a case involving the deliberate substitution of vaccine ingredients.
Corruption is serious business in China. The regulator lost its autonomy and was folded into the Ministry of Health following the 2007 execution of former chief Zheng Xiaoyu. Zheng had been found guilty of taking bribes to approve substandard medicines.
