Dey Pharmaceuticals - Top 10 Pharma Cargo Thefts
Dey Pharmaceuticals Truck
Date: September 6, 2009
Time: Unknown
Location: Clearwater, FL
Value: $2 million
Drugs stolen: Prescription respiratory medication - Albuterol
The trailer was stolen from a trucking yard over a holiday weekend. Cargo theft of pharmaceuticals is a problem restricted mainly to North and South America where the market is the most lucrative. This is in stark contrast to Europe, where drugs are cheaper and widely available.
Though cargo theft remains largely nonviolent in the U.S., trucks are forced to pull over in Latin and South America, either by coercion or corrupt police. This was illustrated in a recent theft in Puerto Rico, when two armed men hijacked a trailer. Mexico, Brazil and Argentina remain the biggest hotspots for cargo theft outside of the U.S., which maintains the top spot in number of thefts.
