The shipment departed from Louisville, KY, at approximately 3:00 PM en route to Memphis. The lone driver stopped at a truck stop along I-40 in Denmark and left the vehicle briefly to shower. The driver left the truck running but locked. When he returned the tractor trailer was gone.
Previously cargo theft didn't garner much attention from law enforcement, but that's changing. With the re-authorization of the Patriot Act in 2005, Congress also dictated that the FBI start compiling cargo-theft statistics. Additionally, last September California passed a law classifying cargo-theft as grand theft as opposed to the lesser property crime it was previously classified as.
Resolution: This entire shipment was recovered in Florida on October 20.
